Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman (2020) is based on the last known photograph of Tubman, made in 1911 by an anonymous photographer. The photograph is archived in the Library of Congress, as part of the Miller National American Women’s Suffrage Association scrapbooks. Thomas created the portrait in 2020 to mark the bicentennial of Tubman’s birth year and the beginning of a new decade.
The portrait was included in ‘Free as they want to be’: Artists Committed to Memory at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center as part of the 2022 Fotofocus Biennial. The exhibition considered the historic and contemporary role photography and film have played in remembering legacies of slavery and its aftermath and examined the social lives of Black and white Americans within the context of the land, home, photographic albums, historic sites and in public memory.
